SUMMARY:5th Conference: “Music and Artificial Intelligence”
DESCRIPTION:Image created by designer Marta Aymerich with AI supportDescriptionProgrammeDescriptionUnder the title Music and Artificial Intelligence\, the 5th Conference of the Pau Casals UNESCO Chair takes Maestro’s legacy as a starting point to reflect on the transformations in the musical world and the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence. Casals’ humanistic vision\, understood as a tool for social and cultural transformation\, serves as a framework to explore how innovation can enhance artistic expression. \nWith the aim of sharing knowledge\, experiences\, and research methodologies applied to sound creation\, the conference will bring together researchers\, artists\, and music professionals. It will explore how artificial intelligence can contribute to generating new musical experiences\, how these technologies can be integrated into education and artistic production\, and what implications they may have for the future of the sector. \nThe conference is structured into three main blocks. \nThe first consists of a round table of researchers and thinkers\, moderated by Tere Badia\, Director of HacTe (Hub of Art\, Science and Technology of Barcelona)\, featuring contributions from Joan Manuel del Pozo\, President of the Catalan Education Council; Jorge Luis Marzo\, art historian; and Tatiana Afanador\, researcher in art and technology. \nThe second block features the keynote lecture by Xavier Serra\, Professor at the Department of Engineering at Universitat Pompeu Fabra\, titled “Representation and Understanding of Pau Casals in Artificial Intelligence Systems”. The lecture will examine the capabilities of AI systems to represent knowledge about Pau Casals and his musical legacy. It will describe mechanisms for accessing and generating information\, as well as limitations in capturing contextual\, cultural\, and interpretative dimensions. Finally\, it will consider key ethical challenges and propose directions for the development of more robust and context-aware technologies. \nThe third block concludes with a second round table of artists and creators\, moderated by Laia Blasco\, professor and researcher in arts\, design\, and multimedia within the DARTS group and Director of the Arts Degree at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC)\, featuring Lina Bautista\, musician and live coder\, member of TOPLAP Barcelona and Axolot; Lluís Nacenta\, Director of the Design Museum and Head of Programmes at the Disseny Hub Barcelona; and Iván Paz\, live coder and founder of the collectives axolot.cat and toplap_barcelona. \nThe conference will close with a live coding musical performance by the artist Lina Bautista. \nThe event will include contributions from Dr. Àngels Fitó\, Rector of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya; Dr. Joan Fuster-Sobrepere\, Director of the Pau Casals UNESCO Chair; and Mr. Jordi Pardo\, Director General of the Pau Casals Foundation. \nConference held in Catalan.Programme9:15–9:30 h Accreditation \n9:30–9:40 h Institutional opening\nWith contributions from Dr. Àngels Fitó Bertran\, Rector of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya; Mr. Jordi Pardo Rodríguez\, Director General of the Pau Casals Foundation; and Dr. Joan Fuster-Sobrepere\, Director of the Pau Casals UNESCO Chair. \n9:45–10:50 h Round table with researchers and thinkers\nWith contributions from Joan Manuel del Pozo\, President of the Consell de l’Educació de Catalunya; Jorge Luis Marzo\, art historian; and Tatiana Afanador\, researcher in art and technology. \nThe debate is moderated by Tere Badia\, Director of HacTe (Hub of Art\, Science and Technology of Barcelona). \n10:55–11:25 h Coffee break \n11:30–12:30 h Lecture: “Representation and Understanding of Pau Casals in Artificial Intelligence Systems”\nThis lecture will examine the capabilities of artificial intelligence systems to represent knowledge about Pau Casals and his musical legacy.
