DESCRIPTION:DescriptionProgramDescription\nThe 4th Conference of the Pau Casals UNESCO Chair\, titled “Making Music Together. Education and Creative Participation”\, is framed within the humanistic and musical legacy of an artist deeply committed to his time\, who understood music as an expression of the best of the human condition. In contrast to war\, music represented for him a profound connection with the meaning of life\, a source of self-esteem and dignity\, both individual and collective. Beyond aesthetic enjoyment\, music is—and should be—an experience of encounter\, cooperation\, shared joy\, mutual commitment\, and respect. In short\, everything that contributes to the growth and strengthening of community spirit and citizenship. \nThe aim of this conference is to reflect on how citizens in our society access culture and basic musical education\, as well as on the role of music studies both in schools and in professional training. It will also address questions such as “why and for what purpose do we believe we need to make music together?” and “how could we ensure the possibility of doing so?” \nThe conference is free of charge and will begin at 9:45 a.m. It will feature artists such as Tarta Relena (a folk and progressive gregorian-inspired music group)\, Abel Antón Delgado (violinist and writer)\, and Quim Carandell (La Ludwig Band)\, among others. They will take part in a round table of professional musicians\, where they will share their experiences of making music together. This will be followed by a talk by Paolo Bortolameolli\, Associate Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. DESCRIPTION:DescriptionProgramDescription\n\n\nPAU CASALS UNESCO CHAIR\nProtection of artists at risk and Cultural Rights\nThe Pau Casals UNESCO Chair is participating in MONDIACULT 2025 with the side event “Protection of Artists at risk and Cultural Rights”. Throughout his career as a musician\, Pau Casals advocated for peace\, international understanding\, and the role of the United Nations. His legacy is grounded in a commitment to the struggle for peace through music and culture. \nDespite the existence of an international legal framework for protection\, society continues to witness violations and vulnerabilities manifested in cultural destruction. These acts have mobilized global awareness of the need for effective protection of artists\, creators\, performers\, and other cultural agents who are forced to leave their countries due to the impossibility of exercising their rights. Various international and local organizations\, as well as some cities\, have supported this protection through civil society initiatives in different forms of hosting and solidarity. \nThe aim of this conference is to raise awareness of the effects of war and conflict on the cultural life of populations\, and to reflect on United Nations guidelines regarding the intentional destruction of heritage and the impacts of armed conflict. This meeting\, bringing together cultural and social actors\, seeks to promote solidarity with artists\, performers\, creators\, and others who are forced to leave their countries or cities due to war or conflict\, and to present experiences of reception\, refuge\, and support. \nThe conference will include presentations on initiatives currently being developed in Barcelona\, as well as research on the legacy of Pau Casals in this field. All of this is framed within the implementation and practical application of cultural rights. \nWith the collaboration of: \n\n\n\nGABEIRAS FOUNDATION\nCulture as a Global Public Good as a Guarantee of Cultural Rights\nThe Gabeiras Foundation is an organization established in 2016 dedicated to research\, dissemination\, and advocacy in the field of cultural rights. Within its lines of work\, at the beginning of 2023 the Foundation launched a multidisciplinary working group to address the current debate on “culture as a basic good”. \nIn recent years\, several concepts have emerged in public discourse that define culture in different ways\, such as “a basic and essential good” (Law 14/2021 of 11 October)\, “a global public good” (MONDIACULT\, Mexico 2022)\, and “an essential public good and global public good” (Spanish EU Presidency\, Cáceres 2023). The aim of the working group is to provide a solid conceptual framework for this debate\, enabling its proper development and implementation. The work seeks to support legislative and regulatory transformation so that culture is understood as an essential good to be protected\, and cultural participation as a right to be fully guaranteed. \nThe conference will present the work carried out by the group to date\, as well as contributions from key cultural actors from Latin America. DESCRIPTION:Objectives\n\nScientific dissemination: fostering reflection on the current state of research regarding the musical and humanistic legacy of Pau Casals’ work.\nRaise awareness of the various initiatives that\, under the name of Pau Casals\, promote cultural and social activities.\nStrengthen coordination\, connections\, and collaboration across the entire Casals network.\nEncourage the presentation of studies and research on the life\, legacy and values of Pau Casals.\nPromote the international projection and cooperation of initiatives aimed at preserving and advancing Pau Casals’ musical and humanistic legacy.\nDisseminate the contributions and outcomes presented trough these initiatives.\n\nPurpose\nThe Pau Casals International Symposium is an initiative whose primary aim is to share knowledge and present new research\, projects\, and ongoing activities related to the musical and humanistic legacy of Pau Casals\, both nationally and internationally. \nThe Symposium is conceived as a triennial meeting point for projects\, professionals and institutions to showcase projects and activities\, foster wider dissemination\, and encourage collaboration and coordination. The possibility of establishing a network-based coordination mechanism will also be explored. \nThe programme of each edition will include the presentation of new research\, discussions\, and initiatives aimed at strengthening coordination among musical events\, heritage sites\, and other activities related to Pau Casals’ legacy. In this regard\, the Symposium is expected to feature research project presentations\, round tables\, workshops\, dialogues\, and musical activities. \nWith the support of the Entidad de Gestión de los Artistas Intérpretes o Ejecutantes de la música (AIE).

DESCRIPTION:Description\nThe Pau Casals UNESCO Chair commissioned researcher Dra. Gemma Caballer Albareda to conduct a study focusing on the multifaceted figure of Pau Casals through the values of peace\, justice and freedom that guided him throughout his life and career. \nThe outcome of this research is the book Pau Casals and the Spanish Refugee Aid: The Maestro’s Humanitarian Commitment\, which explores his humanitarian work with Spanish Refugee Aid\, a charitable organization established in 1953 by Nancy Gardiner Macdonald to raise funds to support Spanish refugees in exile in southern France. \nThe event will feature a dialogue between Gemma Caballer\, historian and author of the book\, and Miquel Berga\, Honorary Professor of English Literature at Pompeu Fabra University. \nThe event will conclude with a short musical performance. \n  \nThis research project was carried out with the support of the Memorial Democràtic de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
