Casals’ humanistic vision\, understood as a tool for social and cultural transformation\, serves as a framework to explore how innovation can enhance artistic expression. \nWith the aim of sharing knowledge\, experiences\, and research methodologies applied to sound creation\, the conference will bring together researchers\, artists\, and music professionals. It will explore how artificial intelligence can contribute to generating new musical experiences\, how these technologies can be integrated into education and artistic production\, and what implications they may have for the future of the sector. \nThe conference is structured into three main blocks. \nThe first consists of a round table of researchers and thinkers\, moderated by Tere Badia\, Director of HacTe (Hub of Art\, Science and Technology of Barcelona)\, featuring contributions from Joan Manuel del Pozo\, President of the Catalan Education Council; Jorge Luis Marzo\, art historian; and Tatiana Afanador\, researcher in art and technology. \nThe second block features the keynote lecture by Xavier Serra\, Professor at the Department of Engineering at Universitat Pompeu Fabra\, titled “Representation and Understanding of Pau Casals in Artificial Intelligence Systems”. The lecture will examine the capabilities of AI systems to represent knowledge about Pau Casals and his musical legacy. DESCRIPTION:DescriptionProgramDescription\n\n\nPAU CASALS UNESCO CHAIR\nProtection of artists at risk and Cultural Rights\nThe Pau Casals UNESCO Chair is participating in MONDIACULT 2025 with the side event “Protection of Artists at risk and Cultural Rights”. Throughout his career as a musician\, Pau Casals advocated for peace\, international understanding\, and the role of the United Nations. His legacy is grounded in a commitment to the struggle for peace through music and culture. \nDespite the existence of an international legal framework for protection\, society continues to witness violations and vulnerabilities manifested in cultural destruction. These acts have mobilized global awareness of the need for effective protection of artists\, creators\, performers\, and other cultural agents who are forced to leave their countries due to the impossibility of exercising their rights. Various international and local organizations\, as well as some cities\, have supported this protection through civil society initiatives in different forms of hosting and solidarity. \nThe aim of this conference is to raise awareness of the effects of war and conflict on the cultural life of populations\, and to reflect on United Nations guidelines regarding the intentional destruction of heritage and the impacts of armed conflict. This meeting\, bringing together cultural and social actors\, seeks to promote solidarity with artists\, performers\, creators\, and others who are forced to leave their countries or cities due to war or conflict\, and to present experiences of reception\, refuge\, and support. \nThe conference will include presentations on initiatives currently being developed in Barcelona\, as well as research on the legacy of Pau Casals in this field. All of this is framed within the implementation and practical application of cultural rights. \nWith the collaboration of: \n\n\n\nGABEIRAS FOUNDATION\nCulture as a Global Public Good as a Guarantee of Cultural Rights\nThe Gabeiras Foundation is an organization established in 2016 dedicated to research\, dissemination\, and advocacy in the field of cultural rights. Within its lines of work\, at the beginning of 2023 the Foundation launched a multidisciplinary working group to address the current debate on “culture as a basic good”. \nIn recent years\, several concepts have emerged in public discourse that define culture in different ways\, such as “a basic and essential good” (Law 14/2021 of 11 October)\, “a global public good” (MONDIACULT\, Mexico 2022)\, and “an essential public good and global public good” (Spanish EU Presidency\, Cáceres 2023). The aim of the working group is to provide a solid conceptual framework for this debate\, enabling its proper development and implementation. The work seeks to support legislative and regulatory transformation so that culture is understood as an essential good to be protected\, and cultural participation as a right to be fully guaranteed. \nThe conference will present the work carried out by the group to date\, as well as contributions from key cultural actors from Latin America. Beyond aesthetic enjoyment\, music is—and should be—an experience of encounter\, cooperation\, shared joy\, mutual commitment\, and respect. In short\, everything that contributes to the growth and strengthening of community spirit and citizenship. \nThe aim of this conference is to reflect on how citizens in our society access culture and basic musical education\, as well as on the role of music studies both in schools and in professional training. DESCRIPTION:DescriptionProgramDescription\n\n\n\n\nThe professional conference “Music and Social Transformation”\, included within the 2023 commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Pau Casals’ death\, will focus on the transformative role of music in social cohesion and inclusion\, intercultural dialogue\, and conflict prevention. It aims to provide an opportunity to collectively reflect on why it is necessary to advocate for music as both a right and a key tool in building more attentive and just societies\, while also highlighting existing work and amplifying the voices of people involved in projects at local\, national\, and international levels.\nThe reflections and content of the various sessions will seek to gather and systematize a set of illustrative experiences to improve the transfer of knowledge arising from social and cultural practices.\nBeyond sharing experiences\, and based on an analysis of the current situation\, the conference will also reflect on the outstanding challenges and possible lines of action needed to address them. DESCRIPTION:DescriptionProgramDescription\nContext \nThroughout his life\, Pau Casals placed music at the service of the ideals of peace\, justice\, and freedom. His artistic career was linked to a firm social commitment to the issues of his time. His defense of fundamental human rights and peace\, from his position as a musician\, allows us to situate his legacy in contemporary debates on the social role of culture and the defense of cultural rights. \nThe Pau Casals Chair aims to promote a space for reflection on the need to develop a deeper understanding of cultural rights\, fostering education and their inclusion in the programming of various cultural and educational services\, such as museums\, libraries\, community centers\, arts schools\, art centers\, and others. \nSince the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948\, key international human rights law instruments have referred to culture. The right of every person to freely participate in cultural life is enshrined both in that declaration and in the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights (1966)\, among other documents. \nIn accordance with the principles of indivisibility and interdependence of human rights\, the right to participate in cultural life cannot be separated from other human rights. Likewise\, the fundamental principles of human rights as a whole—such as universality\, equality\, and non-discrimination—also apply to cultural rights. This means that every person must be able to exercise their cultural rights\, and that measures must be adopted when clear inequalities are identified among people living in a given territory or when obstacles to their effective enjoyment are detected. \nIn recent years\, the United Nations’ approaches to cultural rights\, following General Comment No. 21 of 2009 and the establishment of the mandate of the Independent Expert in the field of cultural rights within the Committee on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights\, have broadened and deepened different aspects of the recognition and exercise of these rights within our cultural systems. Areas of study and analysis in various reports highlight the need to further develop the role of cultural services in education and awareness-raising on cultural rights. There is a noted lack of integration of the cultural rights approach in the discourse and narratives of many cultural institutions and services. In this context\, there is also a perceived lack of specialized training on this subject among cultural managers\, educators\, and cultural professionals\, to which this activity seeks to contribute. \nActivity organized within the framework of International Museum Day. \nThe workshop \nThis activity is a training workshop on cultural rights education. Its main objectives are: \n\nTo contribute to the knowledge and awareness of cultural rights in educational and cultural contexts.\nTo promote reflection and dialogue on cultural rights\, their expressions\, and their presence in everyday life.\nTo foster a cultural rights-based approach in the programming of cultural institutions and projects.\nTo identify cultural rights as one of the key components of transversal civic competences within the educational curriculum and to ensure their presence in the education system.\nTo provide tools for working on cultural rights in educational settings within cultural services.\n\nContents and methodology \n\nUnderstanding cultural rights. DESCRIPTION:DescriptionProgrammeConclusionsDocumentsVideosDescriptionThe first half of the twentieth century in Europe was characterized by the two great world wars and their effects on the population and a significant destruction of cultural heritage. This context influenced the personal and artistic trajectory of Pau Casals\, who understood that music could not remain on the sidelines of the problems of people and life. \nThe constitution of the United Nations and multilateralism opened the doors to dialogue between countries to build a better future. The 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict opened a new stage that\, with the support of UNESCO\, advanced to consider cultural heritage as an asset of humanity. \nDespite this reference in international law\, unfortunately\, some violations stand out\, such as in the Balkan conflict (1991)\, the Bamiyan Buddhas (2001)\, the Iraq war (2003) or the Syrian civil war (2011)\, among other infractions. These events have mobilized global awareness of the need for effective heritage protection in the event of armed conflicts. Throughout the presentations and discussions\, various contributions to be considered were expressed. \nThe need to relate the intentional destruction of heritage to cultural rights was raised\, in accordance with the report of the United Nations expert. We must bear in mind that war also destroys the cultural life of the population who cannot exercise their right to participate freely. In some cases\, conflict can descend into a kind of cultural cleansing\, attempting to deny the values of the other with little respect for diversity. \nThe defence of cultural rights and the cultural dimension of human rights as a whole\, in these war contexts\, is considered a necessary approach\, as well as the relationship with the 2030 Agenda\, which in its SDG 16 proposes to promote peaceful and inclusive societies\, and access to justice for all. \nThe different interventions proposed a vision of integral cultural heritage\, understood as the conjunction of immovable\, intangible and natural heritage\, according to the latest definitions\, and respect for cultural diversity. This perspective recognizes that the cultural destruction of war goes beyond historic buildings and affects the proper functioning of facilities\, events\, festivals and cultural traditions and the organization of collective cultural life. \nIn view of the situation we are living\, in Ukraine\, but also in other places\, it is considered essential to give visibility to the destruction of cultural heritage by trying to get the media to echo these aspects that are often hidden. \nWe propose that the different cultural agents and actors mobilize for the dissemination and commitment to this cause and respect for other cultures. And that the different cultural spheres and expressive languages contribute with their visions and representations of this global conflict. \nEncourage international solidarity for the cultural reconstruction of countries that have suffered war or conflict through international development cooperation agencies. Study the possibility of creating specific aid funds (such as humanitarian aid) for emergency and prevention purposes and for the protection of personnel defending the heritage. \nMaintain constant observation of the realities in which these rights are violated in order to communicate them in general and to complement media reports with data on the impact of wars on culture.
